INCOMING: The Works of Jane Austen

Tuesday, 7 March 2023

To coincide with a cultural revival in Jane Austen’s popularity, St. Mary’s Books has just acquired some of the earliest available editions of her work. A landmark piece of English literature is now up for sale…

We’re delighted to offer the chance to own an extremely rare, complete set of Austen’s works composed entirely of first and second editions - including the only first edition of Pride and Prejudice available for sale in the U.K.

This sixteen-volume collection has been expertly restored in full and half leather, with bespoke sprinkled calf bindings complimented by intricate gilt decoration to enhance the value of this literary rarity. This is the single complete set of Austen’s early editions currently available worldwide.

Copies as sharp as these are increasingly difficult to find. The first edition of national favourite Pride and Prejudice, a work subject to the full impact of recent popular attention, is thought to have been limited to 1,500 copies - first editions alone sell for upwards of £140k. This example stands as one of the finest first edition sets that St Mary’s Books have seen, all held within exquisite handcrafted bindings.

For perspective, Austen was alive during the publishing of three out of four of the novels we’re currently offering.

We’re proud to provide this exceptional investment opportunity centred around one of literature’s greats. Viewing may be scheduled by appointment whilst the collection is held offsite, and price is available upon request.
