Published By: Macmillan and Co 1886 (London)

Being a facsimile of the original manuscript book afterwards developed into 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Deluxe presentation edition. Illustrated by the author. Signed by the author to the to the half title 'Mrs Shute, from the author, Jan 1887.' Beautiful presentation binding in imitation vellum, white paper covered boards with attractive gilt titles to the front board and spine. All edges gilt. A stunning example in clean crisp condition with only traces of wear to the spine ends. Complete with the very scarce original plain blue dustcover. Incredibly, the dustcover is very nearly complete, with only 1cm loss to the tail of the spine, and a small hole towards the centre of the spine. Light wear to the extremities. Minor browning to the spine but covers clean, exceptionally well preserved. Contents in excellent clean bright condition, free from any foxing or previous owners inscriptions. Binding tight, no cracking to the endpapers. Housed in a custom made blue cloth slipcase, with gilt titles to the spine. A truly, almost unbelievably fine example of this iconic children's book. Mrs Shute - author of 'Jappie Chappie' met Carroll in 1882 and they become close personal friends, which continued even after she was widowed in 1886. Even more interestingly, the acclaimed 'Letters of Lewis Carroll' by Cohen actually records a letter where amongst other observations he does indeed promise her a copy of 'Alice'! Not seen on the market at all since it was purchased in 1967 at Sothebys. 95pp
