**A War Record of the 21st London Regiment Surrey (First Surrey Rifles) 1914-1919
Ref. 095756 Edition. First Editon
Published By: H.B. Skinner London (1927)
First edition in the original green cloth, with silver regimental crest to the front board. A phenomenal copy with huge historical interest, signed by Winston Churchill and a number of generals and figures of authority to the title page. Signatures include Field Marshall Montgomery of Alamein, Field Marshall Allenby, Chief Scout Baden-Powell, Field Marshall Byng of Vimy, Field Marshall Claus W. Jacob, and General Herbert Gough of the Fifth Army among others. Also included is a hand written letter and original envelope by Minister Cornelius Greenway of the All Souls Universalist Church, to a Mr Craddock Jones, which adds interesting provenance. It reads: 'Dear Mr Craddock-Jones, I received your letter telling me all about your book with the signatures on the title page. I have the autographed photographs of everyone you mention and of all these gallant leaders a longhand letter, with the exception of your Prime Minister. He honoured me with his signed (?) only. Your patriotic spirit is very commendable and I am willing to help you, only I have all the signers in your book and only last year I made a contribution to the Lord Mayor of London for the (?) fund. If you send the book registered mail, and when I receive it I will mail you $500.00 I am doing this to help you as I have all the signers. This all for England's sake, and I am willing to help all I can - we are the complaints of democracy! Sincerely, Cornelius Greenaway'. The letter is undated, but 'Replied 8/11/41' is written presumably in Craddock-Jones hand to the top left hand corner. Cornelius was a huge collector of autographs, manuscripts, autographed photographs and first editions, and rumoured to have more than 6000 including big names such as President Washington, Jefferson, Stalin, Albert Einstein and Hitler among others. He served as a Corporal in the Army in WW1. Binding has minor rubbing to the spine ends and corners, and a small nick to the cloth towards the base of the spine otherwise in very good condition. Contents clean and bright, 277pp. A scarce title in it's own right, incredible featuring so many generals signatures, and a real point of historical and militarial interest.
