...From its commencement, under Bishop Mackenzie, to its withdrawal from the Zambesi. First edition hardback in original cloth with blind tooled border and gilt stamped motif to cover, gilt tooled title to spine. Pages untrimmed. Illustrated frontispiece and vignette to title page. 32 illustrations total throughout plus two fold out maps; collated complete. Cover and spine rubbed with light wear to edges and a little bumped to corners. Small split to cloth over hinge about 1cm, some shallow splits and frays to spine edges not affecting title. Pages are a little toned, particularly to edges, with infrequent spotting and thumbing. Binding is secure, could maybe use tightening although no visible cracking to gutter. Overall very good- condition. xii + 493 + ii pp. Account of the society's first missionary expedition to Central Africa with the goal of actively opposing the slave trade and training black priests. A good copy of a scarce work.
