Published By: John Chamberlaine, F.S.A. Printed by by William Bulmer and Co. 1812 (London)

A lovely copy of an important work, this collection of portraits after Holbein are stipple engraved - a labour intensive early form of colour printing. Often cited as one of the finest examples of this technique, this book contains 84 portraits, collated complete. Second edition, the first being printed between 1792 and 1800. Most of the portraits are printed on a salmon-pink paper, with several on ivory. Captioned with descriptive text. Hardback quarter leather binding in red, with marbled boards and gilt edges. Gilt border to cover. Five raised bands to spine with gilt décor. Marbled endpapers. Neat ink inscription to ffep with clipping detailing 'from the Bell collection'. Cover rubbed and scuffed with split to lower hinge. Pages have occasional thumbing and grubby marks, with light foxing. For the most part they are clean and the portraits crisp and bright. Lovely copy of a relatively scarce work, with contents in very good+ condition.
