Published By: John Lichfield for Henry Cripps 1633 (Oxford)

An English Exposition of the Roman Antiquities... for the Use of Abingdon Schoole. Newly revised and inlarged by the Author. First published circa 1614, this being a new edition dated 1633. Thomas Godwyn D. D. 1587-1642 was headmaster of Abingdon School in Oxfordshire. Along with this book he wrote 'Florilegium Phrasicon' which together with this book were the only school text books on the subject for a century. Scarce on the market in this early edition. 19th Century vellum binding with title band and gilt tooling to spine. Decorative gilt tooled border to boards. Marbled endpapers. Woodcut border to title page. Expected age toning, and light spotting to prelims and to some pages to the rear. Light worming to gutter of initial blanks. Otherwise very good condition. Neat ink contemporary ownership inscription to p. 277. Lovely copy of a scarce and important work.
