Full title: Analecta Caesarum Romanorum. Or, Select Observations of all the Roman Emperors. Illustrated with their several effigies, according to their coins. The first eighteen by Edward Leigh, Esq; the others added by his son Henry Leigh, --- Masters of Art of both universities. Also Certain Choice French Proverbs Alphabetically Disposed and Englished, added by the same Edward Leigh. [sic]. This book is lacking it's title page, although having researched it we have deduced that it is the fourth edition of 1664, corrected and much enlarged. Edward Leigh first published this historical work in 1635. This particular edition contains numerous engravings of portraits as well as French Proverbs to the rear. Hardback bound in half dark brown leather with marbled boards. Six gilt bands to spine, gilt stamped dentelles and gilt title. Top edge dark, remaining edges speckled red. New endpapers. Opens to Dedicatory which is viii pages, incomplete; finishes abruptly. An Advertisement to the Reader and A Further Advertisement bound from page 133 following pagination. Twelve Caesars seems to be bound correctly but for pp391-393 which are the wrong way round although seems to have been printed this way originally, appears complete. There is a leaf bound to the rear depicting two further coins. Page has been restored to the corner so the page number is lost. 398 pp. French Proverbs also seems correct, pp 399-430 as called for. Corners of binding are bumped, hinge is rubbed. Disbound to rear gutter. Pages are toned with foxing, a few dampstains, and some soiling. Overall the pages are clearly legible and clean. Although incomplete this is a rare work, with any editions pre-1700 not appearing on the market after 1939. A collectable copy.
