Published By: William Collins, Sons, and Company. 1871 (London and Glasgow)

Two volume set, first editions. Half tan leather with blue holographic cloth boards. Double ruled gilt borders to boards, five gilt ruled raised bands to spine, black gilt stamped title bands. Edges speckled red. Marbled endpapers, both volumes contain Ex Libris bookplate of W. H. McAlpine [Sir William McAlpine 1936-2018, director of construction company Sir Robert McAlpine]. "Illustrated by sixty-four large engravings and two hundred and forty woodcuts". Illustrations within the text throughout volume one, and volume two is purely the engravings. Volume two is more oblong in shape to accommodate the many double page engravings. Binding a little scuffed in places although smart and bright. Foxing to pages throughout, more so to volume two, a little darkening to page edges. Pages remain clean and bright for the most part despite this. Overall very good condition, an attractive set with detailed illustrations and interesting provenance.
