Ref. 109035   Edition. First Thus

Published By: Richard Bentley 1833 (London)

Richard Bentley began publication of his Standard Novel Series in 1831. They were a landmark in publication history as they made expensive books widely available in a cheaper, one volume format. These books included the first inexpensive reprints of Jane Austen's fiction which saw her famous works grow in popularity even further. This copy of Pride and Prejudice is the first thus Bentley edition, and the first single volume edition. Contemporary burgundy cloth boards, with new decorative black leather spine. Five raised bands to spine, red title band, elaborate gilt decoration. Page edges have contemporary marbling, faded though still visible. Engraved frontispiece, vignette half title. Light spotting to prelims and occasionally throughout. Frontispiece and half title have a pale damp stain to lower fore corner which does not affect the printing. Otherwise clean and bright. Overall very good condition. A beautiful and dainty copy of the world's most famous novel.
