Ref. 109217   Edition. Limited Edition

Illustrated By: Arthur Rackham

Published By: Doubleday Page & Co 1907 (New York)

Hardcover in original dark green cloth spine and light green paper boards. Gilt stamped title with flourishes to cover and spine, and pictorial pastedown to cover. Patterned endpapers with small bookplate to fep 'Mary Minturn Hartshorne'. Limitation page reads: 'This Edition is limited to five hundred and fifty copies for sale in the United States of America, of which this is number 322' and is signed in red ink by the publisher. Full colour tipped in frontispiece on thicker brown paper, with captioned tissue guard. Pictorial title page. Additional twelve such plates all on brown paper with tissue guards; thirteen total complete. Numerous line illustrations within the text throughout. The paper boards are quite significantly worn to the edges, primarily the lower edge of the front board. The scuffs do affect the gilt stamped 'Arthur Rackham' although this is still quite clearly legible. Binding starting but no visible cracking to gutter. Endpapers are toned with some patches of foxing. There is light spotting and thumbing throughout, although occasionally and concentrated to tissue guards and margins. Infrequent thumbing. Pages are clean and bright for the most part. Each colour illustration is lovely and clear. Overall good condition, would be very good but for the scuffing to the binding. xi + 162 pp. These US and UK deluxe editions were for the first time issued with the plates distributed throughout where appropriate in the story, unlike Rackham's previous books where they were all bound to the rear. Rackham's Alice illustrations are iconic and these limited editions are most sought after. Collectable book.
