Ref. 110293   Edition. First Edition

Published By: W. Taylor 1714 (London)

First edition in original full calf binding with decorative blind tooled cover and five raised bands to spine. Double ruled title with woodcut vignette. Woodcut head and tailpieces. Binding is rubbed and worn, with loss to spine edges and cracking to hinge. Pages a little toned and thumbed, otherwise nice and bright for their age and a sound text block. Overall good+ condition. xvi, [2], 536 pp. William Lowth (1660-1732) was an English clergyman who held the prebendal stall at Winchester for Bishop Peter Mews. His 'Commentary on the Prophets' series is his best known work, which was published from 1714 until 1725. This early first edition is scarce indeed, with no comparable copies on the market, and no auction records since 1949. Nice in original binding, this is an interesting and collectable work.
