Original full calf binding with ornate gilt tooled border and flourishes to cover. Four raised bands to spine, each compartment richly decorated with gilt. Metal corner guards to fore corners and to hinge side. Decorative matching metal vignette to centre of boards. Two functioning metal clasps. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Manuscript notes to preliminary blanks with family birth dates, beginning 1732 and ending 1745. Detailed engraved title page depicting an arch over columns, and Kign David playing the harp and the words "Verbum Dei." Triple ruled red border. Additional title page to the New Testament dated 1652.A2 dedication: "To the most high and mighty Prince, James, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c." Fleur-de-lis pattern border as well as red ruled border. Fleur-de-lis headers to each part of the book; the beginning of the scriptures; 'The Psalmes of David in Meeter'; and 'A Forme of Prayer to be used in private houses every Morning and Evening'. Text is in two columns of Roman font and the red border continues to every page. Decorative engraved capitals to each Bible book. Separate title page for "The Whole Book of Psalmes" which is dated 1652. Small chip to top left of spine, spine edges and hinge rubbed with a few scuffed patches. Some discolouration to the leather around the metal, although it remains remarkably smart. A very beautiful antiquarian Bible in stunning condition. This particular version is scarce on the market.
