Norman Lewis
Ref. 110750 Edition. First Edition
Published By: Jonathan Cape 1960 (London)
First edition hardback in original publisher's green binding with gilt lettering to spine. Original pictorial printed dust jacket, clipped but not unclipped. Signed in ink to ffep: "For Mary Fletcher / A brief Islamic sensation / from Norman Lewis". Light shelf wear to jacket edges. Creasing and a small split approx. 1 cm to top edge. A little rubbed. Internally bright and clean. Overall very good condition. 256 pp. The author's sixth novel. "In 'The Volcanoes Above Us' Normal Lewis described the violent rejection of the West and all it stands for by a primitive tribe of Central American Indians. In his present novel he has carried to Algeria, 'the African frontier,' his scrutiny of the growing world reaction against the ideas, the presence and the 'benefits' of our civilization. His theme, in fact, as Cyril Connolly said of his earlier novel, is the meaning of civilization and progress." Rare, only one other copy on the market. This has been flat-signed. A collectable work.
