Ref. 110754   Edition. First Thus

Illustrated By: Pickering Greatbach

Published By: Richard Bentley 1833 (London)

An incredible set of the first re-issues of Jane Austen's novels in English since 1818 in original cloth. Gilson D6-D7 notes this edition is 'very rare in any state'. We believe the set to be a variant of D6 with the title imprint reading 'CUMMING, DUBLIN.-BELL & BRADFUTE, EDINBURGH.' Spines are decorated in gilt with volume numbers only, as opposed to the paper labels described. The date is missing from the frontispiece and title page of SS. In D7 Gilson notes that information is incomplete due to the lack of surviving copies. D6 variants were reissued later in 1833 as numbered volumes for sale as a set with the plates of the Standard Novel series. Light shelf wear and minor rubbing, the bindings are among the sharpest we have seen. Label and inscription dated 1865 of a Mrs Maria Hume. A beautiful and rare set that is important in the publication history of the most iconic works in English literature.
