An incredible early set of Jane Austen's works in original cloth. Gilson D7x. A reprint of the Collected Edition first issued in 1833. Purple bead-grain cloth by Westleys & Co., London. Heavily decorated in blind and gilt. Gilson notes: 'The British Library has a set in original cloth... another set in fine state is in the collection of Mrs. D.H. Warren, and the Bodleian Library has worn copies of Vols. 1-4 only.' A rare early set indeed, in remarkable condition. Cracking to gutters although sound for the most part. Inscription of Maria Hulme as well as label to fep. Engraved frontispiece and titles are dated 1833, printed titles 1856. Minor shelf wear, spine edges a little bruised with the odd small nick. Frontis and tissue guard of vol v are detached but present. Light occasional spotting largely marginal. Beautiful set, collectable and rare.
