The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
Victor Hugo; translated by Frederic Shoberl
Ref. 110756 Edition. First Edition
Published By: Richard Bentley 1833 (London)
First edition in English of Victor Hugo's gothic masterpiece. Half tan calf with marbled boards, gilt ruled borders. Five raised bands to spine, gilt ruled, two morocco title bands. Edges and endpapers marbled. Engraved frontispiece and title page. Light shelf wear to edges. Spine is scuffed to lower edge, with a few patches of sunning. Small loss to corner of title band. Sporadic internal foxing, concentrated to first and final leaves, not disfiguring. Scuff to rear endpapers. Overall a smart copy in a lovely binding. Just 250 copies of the French first edition were published in 1851. This is the first English translation of the work. The first book to include 'beggars' as protagonists, it was met with huge success and spurred gothic revival architecture. In fact, much of the Notre-Dame's present appearance is due to the famous story! Rare, with only one other comparable on the market currently and just three recorded appearances at auction. A collectable book.
