The Accedens of Armory
Gerard Legh
Ref. 111036 Edition. Third Edition
Published By: Rychard Totell 1576 (London)
Third edition of the most popular heraldic work of the 16th century. Gerard Legh (unknown-1563) was an English lawyer, whose only published work went on to influence subsequent works on the subject. Three bookplates: John Orr 1891, Frederick Rapsey, and Birnie of Broomhills. The Birnie family possessed the estate of Broomhill in Lanarkshire until about 1825. Partial engraved title page which has been guarded. The first few pages have areas of guarding, some damp staining, and some wormholes to the very edge. Page are then for the most part complete, with some soiling and dampstaining, and occasional marginal annotations in an early hand. Final couple of leaves and table are also guarded to the edges. All edges red. Engravings throughout, including a couple of full page ones. Blue cloth binding with paper covered boards. Overall fair to good condition. This early work is rare indeed, this edition appearing only a handful of times in auction records. While the binding leaves something to be desired, internally the work is largely complete and in good condition. A collectable and intriguing work. Our price £1250.
