Undated, circa 1890 according to worldcat. Author identified as that of "The Life of General Gordon;" i.e. Eva Hope. Hardback bound in original blue cloth with gilt blocked title band to cover and spine. Embossed floral pattern to cover and spine with gilt details. Bevelled edges, all edges gilt. Patterned endpapers. Prize bookplate to fep. Portrait frontispiece. Further 30 illustrations throughout. Some rubbing and scuffing to binding. Very infrequent light spotting. Pages clean if a touch toned. A handsome copy, very good condition. viii + 433 + xviii pp. H. M. Stanley (1841-1904) is a Welsh-American explorer who is best known for his search for David Livingstone in central Africa. The author is Mary Anne Hearn [pseud. Marianne Farningham or Eva Hope] (1834-1909) who was a British feminist writer who emerged from the lower classes.
