Jules Verne; translated by Geo. M. Towle and N. D'Anvers
Ref. 111427 Edition. Author's Illustrated Edition
Published By: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington 1880 (London)
Hardback bound in original green cloth with black embossed pictorial cover and spine, with gilt lettering and accents. All edges gilt. Prize bookplate to fep dated 1881. Illustrated frontispiece, a further six full page illustrations throughout. Rubbing to binding, mostly over hinge and to edges. Corners bumped. Darkening to endpapers. Loose ffep. Small patch of foxing to lower edge of pages, from frontispiece to page 15 - not affecting text and growing fainter. Some light shading to frontispiece and title page edges. Some shading and thumbing to page edges throughout, otherwise they are clean. Mottling to reps. Light marks and indentations from cups to rear board. Binding starting but sound. Presents nicely, a decorative binding with the gilt remaining bright. Overall very good condition. viii + 192 pp. Rare indeed, no records of this particular edition appearing at auction and none that I can see on the market. 'Author's Illustrated Edition'. Later than the 5th edition but earlier than the 8th. Less pages and fewer illustrations than the earlier editions, however it doesn't appear to be abridged. A scarce, collectable early copy in beautiful binding.
