Brown leather boards with ornate gilt tooling to front; a little loss to corners. Hinges starting. Spine features elaborate gilt detail with five raised bands and Morocco title insert. Top of spine lifting. Back board with rubbing to corners. Inside lie vivid marbled endpapers and lovely tooled leather boarder, with 'M. Shelbourn' leather nameplate to pastedown (also with gilt detail). Ffep tanned to edges with very small loss to corner. Pages preceding title page are foxed. Beautiful engraved frontispiece with large title page. Pencil notation to verso reads 'Grantham July 13/05'. Features preface, alphabetical table of fables, and the life of Aesop. Text is clear and bold throughout with slightly enlarged print. Foxing to pg. 24 and the bottom edge of the textblock; top edge gilt. Overall, an unusual and rather lovely edition of history's most iconic fables from Aesop and other mythologists.
