Hardback rebound in quarter leather with marbled boards. Four raised bands to spine. Burgundy title band with gilt tooled title and border. Fep contains bookplate which reads Charles Donald Maclean / Madras Civil Service. Vignette to title page. Thirteen fold out plates to rear. xvi + 547 + errata v + plates xiii pp. Binding near fine condition with light shelf wear. Half title has had restoration to lower left corner not affecting text. Pages quite toned and light to moderately foxed although generally clean, clear to read and intact. Plates are all intact and complete, with the odd closed tear. The first has a small water stain to verso, not affecting the printing. Generally toned, foxed and a little chipped but overall remarkably kept. Overall very good condition. Containing over 900 references, this is Rousseau's most significant work and is still used as a valuable resource today.
