Dedicated to the worshipful master, Bro W.T. Phipps. Kipling's inscription to the inside menu cover reads 'Bro Rudyard Kipling M.M. Lodge. Builders of the Silent Cities No 12 Stomer. For his Bro. W. T. Phipps wor. master sonic lodge, Grantham' Front cover of the menu a little browned otherwise excellent condition. Letter tipped in behind the menu referencing the menu, on Bateman's Burwash letter headed paper reading: 'Dear Sir and Worshipful Brother, I feel myself much honoured by your kind letter of the 12th, enclosing the banquet cards of your inauguration, and it is real pleasure to me to sign them as you request. I am enclosing the two you ask for herewith. Your choice of quotations to suit the different stages of the feast struck me as happy and apposite. You will note that the Lodge I give and of which I was a founder, is composed of brethren engaged on the work of the War Cemeteries in France, and comprises every grade of worker in that emply. It has been so great a success that, I believe, we are going to start it 'opposite number' on the English Register for brethren to return to England. Ours is of course under the French Reformed Grand Loge. With hearty and fraternal greetings to the Brethren under you, believe me, Sincerely and Fraternally Rudyard Kipling'. Signed also by the dedicatee Phipps to the ffep. Book plate for Alice Mary Macdonald loosely inserted. Contents a little foxed, otherwise in very good condition. Binding tight. 413pp + ads. An excellent association copy of one of Kipling's most popular titles, with a great masonic connection and insight into his dedication alongside the freemasons.
