First and only edition. Full 17th Century speckled calf binding with gilt tooled border to front and rear boards. Red gilt tooled title band to spine, with decorative floral gilt tooled decoration and bands. All edge gilt. Marbled endpapers with gilt border. Woodcut printer's device to title and last verso. Portrait of Petrarch to title verso. Several ornaments. Faded ink inscription to bottom of title page. Bumping to edges and cracking to front and rear hinges, although binding is firm. Gilt tooling rubbed in places but bright for the most part. Pages a little toned and dusty as expected for age, title page starting, and some faint bleeding in a green colour to title and verso (minor). A few small marginal damp stains occasionally (minor). Overall a sharp copy, superb condition for age. Supposed work of Petrarch's Laura in response to the love poetry he addressed to her. Colonna, Lord of Palestrina, was a mercenary who served Cosimo Medici in the Tuscan army. Colonna as 'Laura' engages Petrarch in a literary 'joust' or 'Tenzone'. Beautiful and interesting historical book.
