Illustrated By: Aubrey Beardsley

Published By: John Lane, The Bodley Head 1907 (London)

First thus edition hardback in original green cloth. Boards ornately decorated in a floral gilt pattern, with gilt title to spine. Top edge gilt, remaining edges are untrimmed. Sixteen beautifully detailed illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. Cover and spine a little rubbed, although gilt is still bright for the most part. Small dark ink stain to cover. Spine edges bumped, with a little lifting. Corners bumped. Spotting to prelims. Occasional spotting and thumbing throughout, light and largely marginal. Pages a touch toned. Overall very good condition. Aubrey Beardsley was the most controversial artist in the Art Nouveau era, renowned for his dark and perverse images, which were the main themes of his later work. His most famous erotic illustrations concerned themes of history and mythology; of which this book is a fine example. A beautiful book, would make an exquisite gift.
