First edition hardback in half brown leather with marbled boards. Four raised bands to spine with gilt bands and title. Edges speckled red. Two inscriptions to ffep, one looks early and the other is dated 1931. Portrait frontispiece. Binding quite rubbed and scuffed, with patches of surface loss. Cracking to hinge but sound. Light spotting and foxing to pages throughout. Shadow of frontispiece to title page. Pages otherwise clean. Overall good condition. 312 pp. The publisher Rev Jonathan Whittemore was born in Sandy, Bedfordshire in 1802, the place where the recipient of the dedication is. He worked in a publishing house in London, and he and his wife eventually moved to Brighton where he started his own publishing business. He eventually moved to Rushden where he became a well known preacher and Sunday school teacher. This book is a collection of essays from various contributors. The portrait frontispiece depicts Rev John Foster, the English essayist (1770-1843). Only one other recorded copy in the British Library. A scarce book, published in Brighton.
