Ref. 110205 Edition. First Edition
Illustrated By: Arthur Rackham
Published By: William Heinemann 1909 (London)
First edition bound in original blue cloth wilt gilt stamped pictorial cover and gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Top edge coloured blue, bottom edge rough-trimmed. Pictorial endpapers. Full colour illustrated frontispiece mounted on framed card, with captioned tissue guard. Title page with pictorial header and footer. Additional fourteen such illustrations throughout, each with captioned tissue guard. Line illustration headpiece to each chapter, with smaller decorations to chapter tailpiece. Binding lightly rubbed, particularly over hinge. Spine edges and corners a little worn, spine a little sunned. A few small patches of dark and light spots to cover, minor. Top edge colour a little faded and patchy. Spotting to endpapers and half title. Light toning and occasional spotting to pages throughout. Last two tissue guards have some nicks to edges and the penultimate has a tear from the margin. The book remains smart and bright, the pages are lovely and cleaned but for some general toning and the illustrations are beautiful and vivid. Overall a very good example. 136 pp. We see the eerie world of Arthur Rackham develop and progress by incorporating waves and water currents to his linear Art Nouveau style.
