Ref. 110717

1895
A panoramic view of the Bund, Shanghai, with a street scene to verso. Concertina binding half black morocco with floral gilt border, red morocco label with gilt lettering. Fourteen albumen prints laid onto card. Although undated, we see from the Time Ball gives a terminus post quem of 1884 when the signal and time station were erected. Cambridge University hold a similar with a manuscript date of 1898. The view is that of the British Settlement, later the International Settlement when the French and American consolidated. This album has appeared just a few times at auction and is a rare and sought after record of this historical location. A similar album by 'Kung Tai' reached over £10,000 at auction a few years ago. There is little to be found out about 'Tuck Tai' however these albums were produced often for tourists, and this copy seems similar in format and quality to that of the rarest version.
