First Edition. Bound in half black leather with marble paper covered boards. Gilt lettering to spine. Both volumes are rubbed and worn with general wear to the extremities especially the spines, gilt titles slightly dulled. The front board on volume one has become slightly detached to the base despite this the front board remains firm. Volume two has been re-backed with the original binding laid onto new and new end-papers. Volume one, pages from ffep to 4 are detached but complete. Some foxing/ staining, predominately to the first quarter otherwise clean throughout. pp.vi + 610 pp. Ink stamps in red to front free end paper and to the title page from 'Kettering Grammar School Library'. To front end papers is pasted a list of the Owners of Land in Northamptonshire in 1871. Light pencil inscription to rear end paper. Volume two, pp. 672 pp plus two page List of Subscribers. Ink stamps in red to the title page and page 1 from 'Kettering Grammar School Library'. Pages are generally clean throughout with just the occasional foxing/staining. Frontispiece of John Bridges to volume one, plus 35 other plates and 2 folding illustrations of Peterborough Cathedral and Burghley House. The page with the plate of Brington Church has been cropped but with no loss to the image. Occasional creasing to pages. Overall a good copy of this scarce title. This set is heavy and will incur extra shipping charges.
