This is a First Edition, signed by the author with a personal message to the receiver dated to 1929. Bound in dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine as well as a gilt illustration on the front cover. The book is illustrated with 58 plates of black and white photographs taken by Hose during his travels, with the exception of the painting of the burial jar which was painted by his daughter Violet, as well as a map showing the locations of the tribes on Borneo. There is slight rubbing to the top of the spine and some bumps to the corners, as well as cracking to the hinges. Overall, it is in a good condition and is a thorough record of Hose's time and studies on the beliefs, the arts, crafts, creeds, superstitions, morals, and tribal village lifestyle of the various peoples who inhabited the northern region of Borneo. pp. 284.
