1798 and 1805 (London)
Second edition. 2 vols.
John Horne Tooke, radical politician (1736-1812) and the "father of rational philology", established his reputation with the publication of his principal work, "The Diversions of Purley". Originally planned as a three-volume work, this early attempt at a scientific language study was extremely popular and much admired by James Mill and the Utilitarians for its philological approach to language and grammar.
Vol. I's condition is as follows. 1798. Quarter bound in rich brown leather with marbled boards in blue tones. A little loss to marbled paper (see images). Hinges intact, only minor bumping to corners. Spine in excellent condition with bright gilt and detailed decorative blind tooling. Four raised bands. Marbling to back in better condition. Features unusual marbled edges to textblock in vivid red and blue. Internally clean and bright. Features lovely engraved frontispiece of Hermes/Mercury with original tissue guard.
Vol. II's condition is much the same, though there is no frontispiece to this volume. 1805.
