First Edition Hard Back. Inscription from Comus dated 1857 to one of the prelims. Comus is the pseudonym of R.M. Ballantyne. Re-backed with beautifully decorative embossed boards and gilt pictorial to the front. The boards are generally in good condition despite a little wear to the extremities and loss to the corners, minor pen mark to the front. The spine is worn with some loss of the cloth. Binding tight. The pages are a little worn and chipped to the extremities with foxing throughout. Placed to the verso of the front free endpaper is a newspaper illustration of Mr Ballantyne. There are eight full page colour plates throughout one of which has some crude tape repair. Overall a fair copy although scarce to find with the author's signature.
