In four volumes, volumes I-III circa 1864 while the extra volume circa1862. Original purple cloth boards with embossed detail and small gilt pictorial to the front with ornately decorated spines. The binding is in good condition with very little wear however there is some fading, especially to the spines and volumes I to III. The top and bases of the spines are fraying with the cloth splitting along the rear outer hinge of the extra volume. Internally the binding is a little loose with the rear boards partly detached from the contents. The pages although toned with the occasional spot of foxing are generally clean throughout, with illustrations, all present, showing many of the trades of the Victorian Era. The extra volume has a slightly different title " London Labour And The London Poor; A Cyclopaedia Of The Condition And Earnings Of...". A seminal study of London street life in the middle of the century and a groundbreaking study which resulted in the establishment of a special Labour and the Poor Fund.
