Very early edition in original green cloth typical of the publisher John Murray. Gilt titles and tooling to the spine. Lovely blind stamped pictorial in gilt with double line border. Decorative endpapers with the John Murray monogram and rampant griffin as well as a neat name in pencil. The frontispiece (see photo) depicts Darwin in profile protected by a tissue guard and with a facsimile signature beneath - it is particularly striking and clear. Pages are bright and clean with illustrations. Internal binding has mild splitting. Boards have very little wear with the occasional scuffing and tiny mark. Foxing is hardly noticeable and more relevant to the prelims. pp.519. Very good. An important addition to any natural history book collection.
