Bound in half oblong leather with cloth boards, 87 pp. The title pages laid down to the front page in green with a date of 1838 and a hand written insription of 1838, overall in very good condition, The format consists of sequential images accompanied by captions, often referred to as "text comics," instead of using speech balloons, which had been a common feature in political cartoons since the 1770s. In his book "Understanding Comics," comics theorist Scott McCloud states that Töpffer's work is, in many ways, "the father of the modern comic." McCloud highlights Töpffer's use of "cartooning and panel borders," as well as the "first interdependent combination of words and pictures seen in Europe, only limited copies appearing at auction over the last 50 years one only showing. Mr. Vieux Bois meets a young woman and quickly falls for her. His early efforts to win her affection are rebuffed, followed by moments of deep despair. He learns about a rival suitor and decides to challenge him to a duel. He is more skilled with his dueling sword, forcing his opponent to escape. Vieux Bois reaches out to his love’s parents to ask for her hand in marriage. Afterward, he goes home and begins to celebrate exuberantly. His festivities culminate in his arrest for causing a disturbance to the neighbors. The engagement is called off, leaving him in a state of hopelessness.This copy complete with all pages.
