Hardback. Privately printed in 1901 and then as a trade edition, published by Frederick Warne in 1902. This copy printed in 1903, one year after the first edition. Complete with a glassine wrapper which may be the original although not printed. Original paper covered boards with a pretty pictorial paper on-lay to the front. The front board is in good condition despite a little rubbing and wear to the on-lay. The spine has become partly detached, showing the webbing underneath, with a piece missing to the top and base, while the rear board shows a little mark. The glassine wrap has only the front remaining with wear and chipping to the extremities. The text block has become detached from the boards with the front free endpaper and pages 78 & 79 missing. Previous owner's ink stamp to the verso of the frontispiece. Thumb marks throughout with a closed tear to page 9. Illustrated with 27 colour plates by Beatrix Potter, including frontispiece. Overall a much loved copy of Beatrix Potter's first ever story for children.
