The Nursery Alice

Lewis Carroll

Edition: First Edition

Illustrated By: E. Gertrude Thomson

Published By: Macmillan and Co

Containing twenty coloured enlargements from Tenniel's Illustrations To "Alice Adventures In Wonderland". With text adapted to nursery readers by Lewis Carroll. The cover designed and illustrated by E. Gertrude Thomson. This is the first published copy of Lewis Carrolls Nursery Alice, the "second edition". The first unpublished edition of 1889 was rejected by Lewis Carroll for being to bright and gaudy. This copy has the price of one shilling to the title page although advertised as four shillings to the rear and page 34 has Alice facing the Cheshire Cat. Beautifully illustrated to the front by E. Gertrude Thomson, who took so long to produce the illustration, John Tenniel's original illustrations were used throughout the pages of the book, although coloured by Thomson. The front board depicts a sleeping Alice with characters from the story behind her. The rear board depicts a Hare with Thomson's initials underneath. The boards show some discolouration with possibly, the remains of a label to the front and loss to the corners. A little fraying to the top and base of the white cloth spine. The endpapers are toned with some tape residue, neat inscription dated 1899 to the front free endpaper. The rest of the pages are clean despite the very occasional thumb mark. The colour frontispiece is complete with the tissue guard, however very slightly detached along the top edge. Overall a good copy of a much loved book.
