Honoré de Balzac: Droll Stories (Les Cent Contes drolatiques, or The Hundred Facetious Tales)

Honoré de Balzac

Edition: Limited

Illustrated By: Elaine Raphael / Don Bolognese

Published By: Franklin Library

This lovely hardback limited edition Franklin Library copy of Honoré de Balzac's translated "Droll Stories" (otherwise known as Les Cent Contes drolatiques, or The Hundred Facetious Tales) is beautifully bound in crimson leather. The book is opulently decorated, with all-edge gilt, as well as gilt decorations, lettering, and illustrations on the cover and spine. This impeccable presentation continues inside the book, which has stunning brown silk endpapers, a satin ribbon page marker, and a playful use of red and black ink for chapter titles and other interior decorations. Elaine Raphael and Don Bolognese's imaginative full-page black ink illustrations add a sense of whimsy and help to ground the merry stories and their characters, as one catches a glimpse into what Balzac views to be the golden age of french national character before it was overtaken by "hypocritical prudery". This book has 424 pages of text which are in near perfect condition and appear unread. This book is looking for a new home, and would be a lovely gift for any collectors of limited edition Franklin Library books, or for any fans of Honoré de Balzac's work.
