St Mary's Books is proud to present The Lord of the Rings complete in Three Volumes by J. R. R. Tolkein. In this set, one can find a first edition second impression of "The Fellowship of the Ring", a first edition first impression of "The Two Towers", and a first edition first impression of "The Return of the King". Each hardback book is bound in a stunning crimson cloth with gold gilt letterng and decorations to the spine. These books are complete with their unclipped original dustjackets, which, though they have some fading to their spines, are in remarkable condition considering their age and rarity. Apart from an insciption to the free endpapers of each of the books, these editions are in very good condition, and remain clean and readable, complete with fold out maps. Tolkein's "The Lord of the Rings", though a direct sequel to the more youthful and whimsical "The Hobbit", takes on a much darker tone, and is more directly influenced by Tolkein's experiences in the First World War. Addressing themes of companionship, loyalty, and loss, these great works are intended for a slightly older audience than his previous works. In this trilogy, Tolkein draws more directly from the Beleriand, the content of which eventually saw posthumous publication in The Silmarillion and other volumes. Hammond & Anderson A5 i, ii, iii.
