An Account Of The First Aerial Voyage in England

Vincent Lunardi, Esq. Secretary to the Neapolitan Ambassador

Edition: Second Edition

Published By: J. Bell

St Mary's Books is proud to present this 1784 second edition of "An Account of the First Aerial Voyage in England" signed by the author, Vincent Lunardi, Esq. Secretary to the Neapolitan Ambassador and the first aerial traveller in the English atmosphere. Re-bound in leather, handsomely decorated with blind tooling on the cover and gold gilt lettering on the spine, this fascinating book provides Lunardi's account of his aerial voyage via his letters to his Guardian, Chevalier Gherardo Compagni. Inside, one finds 68 pages of text, containing 8 of Lunardi's letters, an appendix with several letters addressed to him, a short explanation of the apparatus and the balloon, and a contemporary advertisement for Bell's edition of Shakespeare's works. This edition is complete with several beautiful black ink illustrations, including the frontispiece image of Lunardi himself, as well as two fold-out illustrations: one of the balloon and one of the apparatus. This wonderful piece of history is in very good condition, there is some slight bumping to the boards, and two pages of the book are missing (assumed to be further illustrations). Otherwise, this remains a remarkably clean copy of an incredibly old text that is now looking for a new home.
