The Log Of H.M.A R34 Journey to America & Back

Air Commodore E.M. Maitland

Edition: First Edition

Published By: Hodder And Stoughton

Hardback. A First Edition copy complete with it's original dust jacket, with a letter from Rudyard Kipling. There are only two other copies known to be in  institutional Kipling collections with an intact dust jacket, at Harvard and at Yale. This information has been advised from the author of the standard work of Kiplings bibliography, in which this is item Bp11. Handsomely bound in rich blue cloth with bright gilt titles to the spine. The pages are clean throughout with the exception of the last page to the rear which has a stain to the left hand corner, possibly caused by damp. This last page contains a folding map of " The R34's Flights and Radio Work" New rear endpapers. Overall a good copy. The dust jacket is discoloured and there is some wear to the spine, however this title is rare to find, rare still with it's dust jacket. The binding has faded to the rear although still presents well. pp. xii + 168. This is Air Commodore E.M. Maitlands' firsthand, diary like, account of the first ever East to West transatlantic airship flight in July 1919. It chronicles the 108 hour journey from Scotland to New York and back, documenting daily crew life, technical issues, weather navigation and the historic landing.
