Wordsworth's Poetical Works (Signed by William Wordsworth)

William Wordsworth

Edition: First Edition

Published By: Edward Moxon

St Mary's Books is proud to present this 1842 first edition of "Wordsworth's Poetical Works" signed by William Wordsworth himself. In an era where writers rarely ever signed their works, this book contains an incredibly rare inscription addressed to Hannah Hoare, a dear friend of both William and Dorothy Wordsworth and the daughter of notable quaker and abolitionist, Samuel Hoare - Wordsworth inscribes his name and describes himself as "her affectionate friend", dated June 2nd 1842, Hampstead. This incredible book contains "The Borderers", Wordsworth's only tragedy, composed much earlier in the late 18th century, but first published in this 1842 edition. In addition, one finds the first publishing of "Poems, Chiefly of Early and Late Years". This hardback book is neatly bound in navy cloth with gold gilt lettering on the spine. Inside, one finds i-xi, 405 pp., and 5 pages of advertisements to the back of the book. This copy is in very good condition - though there is some slight bumping and wearing to the corners of the boards, there is very little foxing inside the book and the pages remain clean, bright, and readable. This incredibly rare item has been remarkably well preserved, and is now looking for a new home where it will be similarly appreciated.
