Aerial Warfare

R.P. Hearne

Edition: First Edition

Published By: John Lane The Bodley Head

Aerial Warfare is a pioneering book by motoring journalist R.P. Hearne, first published in 1909. It is widely recognised as the first work on aeronautics written for the general public rather than just military specialists. Published just five years before World War I, the book accurately predicted the use of aeroplanes and airships in combat. With an Introduction by Sir Hiram S. Maxim, the inventor of the first portable automatic machine gun. This copy is bound in rich blue cloth with gilt titles and pictorial to the front and gilt titles to the spine. The top edge is gilt while the fore-edge is untrimmed. Illustrated with several diagrams and black and white photographs. Overall a very good copy with just a little wear to the binding, especially to the spine. There is a neat inscription to the front free end-paper and the occasional spot of foxing to the pages. The frontispiece photographic plate has a closed tear to one side. pp. xxxix + 237. A scarce title and a must for any aviation enthusiast.
