Airships In Peace And War

R.P. Hearne

Edition: Second Edition

Published By: John Lane The Bodley Head

Airships In Peace And War is a seminal early aviation book by motoring journalist R.P. Hearne, first published in 1910 by John Lane. It is technically the substantially revised second edition of his 1909 work, Aerial Warfare. Written during a period of intense European rivalry, Hearne assumed a conflict with Germany was inevitable and famously identified the airship as a practically invisible enemy. It highlighted that Germany had ten airships while Britain only had one, and prompted the British government to increase investment in aviation research. With an introduction by Sir Hiram S. Maxim, inventor of the Maxim gun. This copy is bound in rich blue cloth with bright gilt titles and pictorial to the front, and gilt titles to the spine. Top edge gilt while the fore-edge is untrimmed. Illustrated with several diagrams and black and white photographs. Overall a very good copy with just minimal wear to the binding. The spine is lightly faded with minor shelf wear. The pages are very clean despite the occasional spot of foxing. pp. xlviii + 324. A scarce copy, a must for any aviation enthusiast.
