St Mary's Books is incredibly proud to present this 1772 first edition of "The Complete English Dictionary or, General Repository of the English Language containing a copious explanation of all the words in the English language" in two volumes (A-G and H-Z) by Reverend Frederick Barlow, Vicar of Barlow. Handsomely bound in dark leather with red leather title bands on the spine and intricate gold gilt blind tooled decorative borders and designs, these hardback volumes contain a repository of contemporary commonly used words and their definitions. Inside, past the marbled free endpapers, one finds not only a list of words and their meanings but illustrations and engravings highlighting select items. These volumes are in relatively good condition - with some signs of wear to the covers and spines, some minor foxing to the interior pages, an ex-libris paste-down on the front free endpaper, and some weakness in the hinges of the first volume. However, for a pair of rare books that are over 200 years old, these copies remain bright, clean, readable and remarkably well preserved. "The Complete English Dictionary" is looking for a new home and would make for the perfect gift for any collector.
