During the late 1930's, the Royal Air Force revolutionised bomber defence by replacing manually aimed guns with hydraulically driven, power-operated turrets. These systems allowed air gunners to easily traverse and elevate machine guns against high-speed fighter aircraft despite intense slipstream resistance. Bristol Gun Turrets Air Publication 1659B Volume I November, 1938 is the official British Air Ministry technical manual covering the Theory, Description, Operation, and Maintenance of Bristol-Operated Gun Turrets. Published in 1938 just after the Munich Crisis and less than a year before World War Two. This copy is bound with paper covers and fastened by string. The covers are worn, as expected with age and use. There is an ink stamp to the front and in pen says "Copy No. 3", with the title Bristol Turrets hand written in red pen along the spine. The pages within are toned with the occasional notation, although clean. Illustrated with many black and white photographs and folding diagrams. A rare and fascinating copy, a must for any aviation enthusiast.
