Edition: First Edition
Illustrated By: L. Benett
Published By: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington
A romantic novel from the acclaimed French Author Jules Verne. This copy, dated 1883, is the very rare First British, First Issue Edition, with the publisher's and author's list to the rear, dated November, 1882. Translated from the French by Mary De Hauteville. Bound in the publisher's original ochre cloth with pictorial and titles to the front, vignette and titles to the spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece and vignette to the title page, by L. Benett, with a further 43 illustrations, together with decorative floral endpapers. Overall a good copy. There is slight discolouration to the binding, however the pictorial and titles are still clean and vibrant. There is a little bit of loss along the top edge and minor shelf wear and light lean to the spine. The pages are generally clean although foxed to the prelims and towards the rear. Previous owner's neat ink signature to the verso of the frontispiece and faintly to the front paste-down. There is a shadow of this signature appearing to the verso of the frontispiece. pp. viii + 312 + 32. This lesser known work stands out as a unique, light hearted departure from Jules Verne's usual science fiction narrative, blending romantic comedy with the beautiful scenery of Scotland. An extremely rare title and a must for any Jules Verne enthusiast.
