European Butterflies And Moths

W.F. Kirby

Published By: Cassell And Company, Limited

European Butterflies And Moths is a monumental 19th century entomological work written by the prominent English entomologist William Forsell Kirby. The book is largely based upon Friedrich Berge's classic German text Schmetterlingsbuch. It remains highly celebrated today by collectors, natural historians, and art lovers for its extraordinary, meticulous hand-coloured plates depicting hundreds of insect species. This copy published in 1898 is bound in rich green cloth with a stunning pictorial front board and spine and an embossed rear board.  All edges are gilt. Decorative floral endpapers and publisher's list to the rear. The book is in very good condition with the colours of the binding still rich and vibrant. There is a little wear, particularly to the spine and corners, and a few spots of discolouration to the boards, although nothing serious. The front hinge has slightly cracked although the text block remains quite firm. There is a previous owner's signature to the front paste-down and to the verso of the front paste-down and frontispiece. The rest of the pages are quite clean, with a little foxing appearing throughout, most notably to the tissue guards and towards the rear. pp. lvi + 427 + 8. Overall a stunning addition to any natural history enthusiast.
