Ferns: British And Exotic is an eight volume botanical masterpiece written by the prolific English naturalist and botanist Edward Joseph Lowe. This work is the definitive study of pteridology ( the study of ferns ) published during the height of the Victorian Era's " Pteridomania " fern madness. Magnificently illustrated with striking colour chromolithographic plates, engraved by Benjamin Fawcett, based on the detailed drawings of the prominent wildlife artist Alexander Fransic Lydon. This set are bound in burgundy cloth with heavily embossed detail to the boards and spine. A bright gilt pictorial to the centre of the front board and gilt titles to the spines complete the bindings classic appearance. Published in 1868, except volume four, published in 1867. The books are in good condition displaying just a little surface wear to the boards. The spines, however have faded and show a little shelf wear. Internally the text block is tight with no loose pages. There is a previous owner's book-plate to the front paste-down on each volume. There is some foxing throughout, heavier at times to the front and towards the rear. However, the pages are generally clean. Some of the pages remain uncut. All volumes are illustrated with several line drawings and of course stunning chromolithographic plates. A highly prized set and a lovely addition for any natural history enthusiast.
