St Mary's Books is incredibly proud to present this stunning six volume set of "A History of British Birds" the 1870 second edition (revised, corrected and enlarged), authored by the Rev. Francis Orpen Morris, B.A. and illustrated by Benjamin Fawcett and Alexander Francis Lyndon. Half bound in green leather with beautiful marbled boards, all-edge gilt, and intricate gilt blind tooled details to the spine, this set has brown leather title bands with gold gilt lettering and 5 raised bands to each spine. "A History of British Birds" was Francis Orpen Morris' bestseller, which describes a series of British Birds and is characterised by its accompanying intricate and brightly coloured illustrations by Benjamin Fawcett and Alexander Francis Lyndon which used a mixture of an innovative woodblock colour-printing process (chromoxylography) combined with original hand-colouring applied to each print. This text forms part of the many natural history works authored by Francis Orpen Morris, and greatly complimented his work as co-founder of the Plumage League, opposing the excessive use of feathers in lady's fashion. In this set, one finds Vol.I, i-xii, 303pp.; Vol. II, i-iv, 283pp.; Vol. III, i-iv, 272pp.; Vol. IV, i-iv, 264pp.; Vol. V, i-iv, 247pp.; Vol. VI, i-iv, 225pp.. This six volume set is in very good condition - the corners of the boards are bumped, some of the marbling on the boards has worn off, there is some foxing throughout each volume, and some title pages have pencil inscriptions on them. However, the majority of the pages remain bright, clean and readable, and importantly each illustration is vivid and clear. "A History of British Birds" is looking for a new home and would make for a perfect gift for any natural history enthusiast or lover of illustrations.
