British Wild Flowers

Mrs Loudon

Edition: Third Edition

Published By: James Nelson & Co.,

British Wild Flowers is a famous 19th century botanical book written and beautifully illustrated by Jane Loudon. It revolutionised gardening and botanical literature by making the study of native British flora accessible, engaging, and highly visual for mainstream, amateur audiences, particularly woman. This copy is the Third Edition,  published in 1859 has been bound in rich green cloth with elegant floral embossing to the boards and gilt decorative detail to the front and spine. The binding is in good condition, despite wear and bumping to the corners, as well as fading and shelf wear to the spine. There are also a few minor marks to the rear board and spine. pp. xvi + 311. Internally the text block is tight with no loose pages. There is the occasional spot of foxing specially to the prelims and towards the rear, however the pages are generally very clean. Illustrated with 60 stunning, hand-coloured lithographic plates. There appears to be an extra plate inserted between pages 188 and 189 ( candytuft, clarkia, nasturtium tom thumb and sweet pea ), not in keeping with the rest of the plates and worn along the extremities. A beautiful book and one to treasure for a long time.
