A Natural History Of New And Rare Ferns

E.J. Lowe

Published By: Groombridge And Sons

A Natural History Of New And Rare Ferns written by the renowned English naturalist Edward Joseph Lowe. This single-volume work serves as a critical supplement and continuation to Lowe's monumental eight volume masterpiece, Ferns: British And Exotic. This companion work focuses on species and variations not documented in his original series. Beautifully illustrated with full-page chromolithographic plates and several woodcut illustrations. This First Edition copy, published in 1862 has been bound in green cloth with pretty embossed boards and spine. There is a small gilt pictorial to the centre of the front board as well as gilt titles to the spine. The binding is a little worn to the corners, with some discolouration, especially to the rear. The spine, not only has a light lean but has also darkened with fraying along the top edge and base. There are adverts to the front and rear endpapers with a previous owner's book-plate to the front paste-down. The pages are foxed throughout with some pages heavier than other's, however the text remains legible. A few of the pages remain uncut and a few are loose. Despite the flaws of this book, it still remains a much sought after book and would make a lovely addition to any natural history enthusiast.
